Common attributes for maps using the ArcGIS Online tiling scheme

Hosted ArcGIS Online map services have been migrated to the Google Maps/Bing Maps tiling scheme. ESRI will continue to host the existing ArcGIS Online map services (e.g., World Street Map, World Imagery, etc.) in the traditional ArcGIS Online tiling scheme for at least six months and, depending on demand, they may remain available longer in order to give users ample time to migrate their maps and applications to the new services. Although the services will remain available, the content in these services will no longer be updated. The following information is for ArcGIS Online maps and layers using the ArcGIS Online tiling scheme.

ArcGIS Online maps and layers using the ArcGIS Online tiling scheme use the same coordinate system, map DPI, and tile size. Cached levels of detail for each map and layer match; however, not all maps and layers contain all levels of detail.

Tile Size of Map Cache: 512 pixels by 512 pixels

Levels of Detail: The number of cached levels of detail varies among map services. The scale levels are calculated, based upon the tile size (512 by 512) and the WGS 84 coordinate system, such that when tiles are laid out starting at 180W and proceeding eastward, the final tile aligns perfectly (no overlap) with the first tile at the international date line.
